Infineon's GaN Solutions Energize OMRON Social Solutions' V2X Vehicle Charging Systems
Infineon Technologies has disclosed a collaboration with OMRON Social Solutions Co. Ltd., a leader in societal system innovations. This partnership unites the top-tier gallium nitride (GaN) power technologies of Infineon with OMRON's cutting-edge circuit configuration and control techniques, resulting in one of the most compact and featherweight vehicle-to-everything (V2X) charging units in Japan. The joint endeavor will spur advancements in wide bandgap semiconductor materials for power systems, propelling the shift towards sustainable energy, enhancing the electricity grid, and fostering the acceptance of electric vehicles (EVs). It aims to empower decarbonization and digital transformation.
In the V2X KPEP-A series, the prowess of Infineon’s CoolGaN technology is harnessed alongside distinctive control mechanisms. OMRON Social Solutions has refined its EV charging system to facilitate a two-way flow of energy between renewable sources, the electrical grid, and EV batteries. The KPEP-A line stands as one of Japan's tiniest, most lightweight multi-V2X setups, boasting a size and mass trimmed by 60% against traditional models, yet delivers an impressive 6 kW charging output. The inclusion of the CoolGaN solution by Infineon has ramped up the system's energy efficiency by over 10% under light loads and approximately 4% in full-load conditions. This elevation in efficiency, alongside reductions in bulk, allows for undemanding installations, effortless upkeep, and opens up possibilities for more sophisticated designs and diversified placement options.
"Partnering with OMRON Social Solutions is immensely gratifying, as our GaN-based solutions hasten the evolution towards sustainable power, mitigating CO2 emissions, and endorsing decarbonization," stated Adam White, Division President of Power & Sensor Systems at Infineon. "This collaboration also simplifies electric vehicle charging for users, dispelling major hurdles to the adoption of EVs."
Atsushi Sasawaki from OMRON Social Solutions, who serves as the Managing Executive Officer and Senior General Manager for Energy Solutions, shared: "Having a comprehensive array of wide bandgap (WBG) solutions notably uplifts the functionality and caliber of our offerings. With Infineon's unparalleled application expertise, we're crafting superior charging systems, ensuring customer and user contentment. We anticipate continual progress with Infineon in developing GaN- and SiC-based power solutions to champion renewable energy usage and the proliferation of electric vehicles."
